The MPO-Registered Education Nationalization Aspirants’ Alliance has issued a one-month ultimatum to the government to meet their key demands, warning of escalating protests-including strikes and an indefinite sit-in if no action is taken.
The decision was announced on Wednesday following a meeting between a 12-member alliance delegation and the Education Adviser and Secretary at the Secretariat.
Speaking outside the National Press Club, where teachers have been staging ongoing demonstrations, alliance Member Secretary Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi detailed the protest roadmap.
If the government fails to respond, the alliance will hold a half-day strike on September 14, followed by full-day strikes on September 15 and 16. Should there still be no progress by October 12, teachers will launch an indefinite sit-in in front of the Press Club.
Their main demand is raising the house rent allowance for MPO-registered teachers from 50% to 75%, citing surging living costs.
The Education Ministry has acknowledged the demand and reportedly forwarded a proposal to the Finance Ministry, recommending a 20% increase in house rent allowance and doubling the medical allowance from Tk 500 to Tk 1,000.
While welcoming the medical allowance hike, Azizi stressed that house rent remains the top priority.
“If the proposal is not formally sent to the Finance Ministry within the deadline, we will begin the next phase of protests,” he said.
Officials noted that full implementation may face budgetary challenges, with the Finance Ministry currently assessing the financial implications.
MPO-registered teachers, who serve in government-aided institutions, have long pressed for parity with fully government-paid teachers in allowances and job security.
Their sustained movement has drawn growing public attention, adding pressure on the authorities to deliver a timely solution.
