Water shortage: Moulvibazar farmers anxious about Boro plantation

Due to the lack of water on both sides of the Kudali ridge in Moulvibazar, farmers are worried about the Boro plantation. Just before the planting of seedlings, the cultivated land is cracked due to lack of water. Besides, the age of seedlings in the seedbed is more than two months and they are getting damaged.
Despite writing to various departments, no initiative has been taken to remove multiple cross dams in Kanjar Haor area. Due to this, the Boro plantation of about 2 thousand hectares of land has become uncertain. For this reason, tension is prevailing among the farmers.
Among the 12 unions of Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila, it is worth noting that the people of more than 100 villages of Mustafapur, Giasnagar and Nazirabad unions are in uncertainty about boro cultivation due to water shortage. The length of Kudali stream running from Fatabil in Moulvibazar municipal area is 17 and half kilometers. Due to the construction of multiple cross dams given to the farmers, the farmers in the lower areas are getting water. Due to this, boro cultivation has become very uncertain in about 2 thousand hectares of land on both sides of Kudali points in the lower area of the cross dam. Cultivated land becomes hard due to lack of water Many farmers are not able to plant seedlings in the land.
In many places, the saplings in Bijtala area are getting old and perishing.
It is known that the villages of Srimangal, Noagaon, Karimnagar, Sungair, Markona, Sikrail, Aktabhara, Bhujbal, Radhakantpur, Gomra, Niteshwar and Fazilpur of Ghiyasnagar Union have been visited on the occasion.
Farmers are unable to cultivate roro due to irrigation crisis in at least 50 villages including parts of Ajmeru, Goigad, Jagannathpur areas of the union. In many places, the land has cracked due to lack of water. However, in some places of these areas, some farmers set up their own deep tube wells
Even though their irrigation needs are fulfilled to some extent, it is not possible for many farmers.
Aslam Mia, a farmer of village Srimangal area of Sadar upazila, said that he has prepared saplings in Bijtala for 100 bigha cultivation in the current Boro season. Due to lack of water only 30 bighas have been able to plant saplings.
Talks are going on with the owner of a fisari 400 yards away from his land to get water. If water is available, saplings can be planted in another 30 bighas of land. The remaining 40 bighas of land will remain uncultivated.
Soleman Miah, a farmer of the same area, said that last year, about 250 bigha
The land is plowed with spade water. He could not raise any water to irrigate his land this year. Seedlings are dying under the bed. This year the entire 250 bigha land will remain uncultivated.
Sona Chandash, Alim Miah, Ekalim Miah, Nitai Debnath and Sujan Miah, farmers of Ajmeru area, said that first with pump machine in the land.
Raise the water and give a plow. Currently, the land is dry and hard due to lack of water. By doing this, they will be seriously harmed.
Local farmers said that they wrote to Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer on January 13 regarding the removal of upstream cross dam.
Complained Copies thereof have been given to the Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board. As there is no solution in this matter, many of the farmers in the lower region are not able to cultivate boro.
Md. Samsuddin Ahmed, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department, said that the target of Boro paddy cultivation this year is 62,100 hectares of land. In this time, about 41 thousand 5 hundred 36 hectares of land has been planted. Govt. because the farmers in the lower areas do not get water
They have written to different offices. As the water problem is not resolved, the agriculture department has informed the administration. He raised the matter separately in the meeting of the District Development and Coordination Committee.
Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Khaled Bin Alid He said that a proposal has been sent to the higher authorities regarding providing water from Manu Barrage as a permanent solution to Boro plantations on both sides of Kudali Rham. A few mountain rhymes are combined with hoe rhymes. Farmers are facing problems due to lack of water source. Taj Uddin said that a short meeting was held with Sadar Agriculture Officer, Acting Chairman of Mustafapur, Giasnagar Union along with various agricultural land farmers of Sadar Upazila.

Local farmers demand that concerned government departments take initiatives to remove cross dams and increase agricultural production from Manu Barrage.
