Most of Sylhet’s public representatives are in hiding after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the face of strong resistance from students in the quota movement. Since last Monday (August 5), complaints are being received that they are nowhere to be found in their office, mobile phone. Public has to suffer in getting civic services.
It is known that Sylhet City Corporation consists of Zilla Parishad, 13 Upazila Parishads, five Municipalities, 106 Unions. However, most of the public representatives are not coming to their offices after last Monday. As a result, public services are disrupted and important public works are also stopped.
It is known that there are Awami League panthi chairman in 11 of the district councils and 13 upazilas. Most of the municipalities, upazila parishads and union parishads of the district have Awami panthi chairman and members. The Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation was also Awami League nominated candidate and most of the councilors were supporters of the same party. Most of the representatives have been in hiding since last Monday. Many did not even come to the office. They are not even available on mobile phones. It threatens the important development work of these areas. Besides, citizens are having to face difficulties in getting the services of the office.
Birth registration and other documents require the signature of the chairman, mayor, many are unable to sign due to not coming to the office. It can be used to register the birth, but it cannot be used because of the signature. Various certificates are not available. As a result, the service seekers are not able to do even the urgent tasks.
Rafsan Ahmed, a resident of Goalabazar Union Parishad in Sylhet district, said, “I allowed the birth to be registered. Now I came to the office but even though the birth registration is ready, I can’t take the birth registration only because the chairman’s signature is not there. Calling the chairman’s mobile phone is found to be switched off.
Same situation with Sajjad Ahmed of this union. He said that inheritance certificate is required for a work on the land, but I have not met the chairman since last one week at the union office. This has blocked my urgent work. The same is the case with the service recipients who come to this union.
