Tangail Correspondent:
For decades, followers of Islam and Hinduism have been practicing their respective faiths side by side within the same premises in Nagarpur, Tangail — a symbol of religious harmony and mutual respect.

The Durga Mandir, officially known as the Ojha Thakur and Harnath Smriti Central Durga Mandir, was established 57 years ago at the Chowdhury Bari in Nagarpur. Adjacent to it, the Nagarpur Central Jame Mosque and Eidgah Ground were established nearly 60 years ago. Since then, both religious communities have been conducting their rituals peacefully and respectfully in the same courtyard.

Locals say that whenever the adhan (call to prayer) begins, all sounds from conch shells, drums, and other instruments used in Hindu rituals come to a halt, ensuring a quiet environment for Muslim prayers. Similarly, during Hindu worship ceremonies, Muslims refrain from any religious activities other than prayer, out of respect for the occasion.

Remarkably, visitors coming to view the Durga idols often take rest or gather in the mosque courtyard, a sign of trust and friendship between the two communities.

During festivals like RamadanEid, or Durga Puja, the two religious groups observe their rituals side by side — in the same place — with no history of conflict or even heated disputes. Residents proudly state that they have always protected and supported each other’s places of worship, setting an example of interfaith unity.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tangail, Md. Mizanur Rahman, expressed his admiration during a recent visit to the Sharadiya Durga Puja mandap. He was deeply moved to witness the peaceful coexistence of the mosque and temple.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Arafat Mohammad Noman commented,
“Had I not been posted here, I wouldn’t have believed it — that such a high level of mutual respect and humanity could exist for decades in a shared space. There are no complaints, only cooperation. This is a shining example for people of all religions.”

The people of Nagarpur remain firmly committed to preserving this spirit of brotherhood and harmony for generations to come.
