Readers’ Voice: Morality in decline
Our society has witnessed a noticeable decline in moral values. Basic principles such as honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility, and empathy are fading, giving rise to selfishness, dishonesty, and social indifference. This decay of morality is not just an individual concern; it affects the entire structure of society, weakening trust, justice, and cooperation.
One of the major causes of moral decline is the influence of modern technology and media. While technology has brought many benefits, it has also exposed people—especially the youth—to content that promotes materialism, violence, and vulgarity. Social media often glorifies fame, wealth, and power over character and integrity. As a result, people begin to value appearance over substance and short-term gain over long-term principles.
Another cause is the weakening of family structures and values. In many households, parents are busy with work, leaving little time to teach children about right and wrong. Traditional practices of storytelling, moral guidance, and religious education have been replaced with digital distractions. When families fail to instil core values, children lack a moral compass.
The education system also shares part of the blame. While academic knowledge is emphasised, moral education is often neglected. Schools tend to focus more on grades and competition than on character development. To counter this decline, strong and immediate steps must be taken.
The decay of morality is a serious concern that threatens the very foundation of a peaceful and just society. It is caused by a mixture of media influence, weakened family bonds, poor role models, and a lack of moral education. However, with collective efforts from families, schools, leaders, and the media, we can revive the spirit of morality and build a better, more humane future.
