The nation today enters a month of remembrance and reflection, marking the first anniversary of the historic July uprising a student-led movement that triggered a major political shift in Bangladesh.
To commemorate the uprising, the interim government, along with major political parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) founded by the protest leaders themselves have each announced separate month-long programmes featuring rallies, cultural events, discussions, and memorial services.
The July-August 2024 mass movement, sparked by student protests against the controversial quota system in government jobs, quickly escalated into a nationwide uprising.
The protestors, largely young and non-partisan, were met with a harsh crackdown by state forces under the former administration a response that drew widespread criticism and, ultimately, catalyzed a broader pro-democracy wave.
