The first ever Science Film Festival 2019 was inaugurated in Bangladesh. Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, in cooperation with JAAGO Foundation, Children’s Television Foundation of Bangladesh, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, PASCH-Schools: Partners for the Future, South Point School and College, Oxford International School, Maple Leaf International School and Mastermind International School, jointly organise the festival from October 12 to November 15, 2019 at different venues in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The inaugural ceremony of the Science Film Festival 2019 was held at the Nawab Ali Auditorium, Maple Leaf International School in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on October 12.
Burkhard Ducoffre, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Dr Samiya Selim, Director, Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, were present as honorable guests at the inaugural ceremony of the festival.
Welcoming the distinguished guests and attending students from different schools, Dr Kirsten Hackenbroch, Director, Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, in her peech said, “Science Film Festival is an offer to engage with a sustainable future for our earth. The
science films particularly address you as the young generation: this is your festival! Take it as a chance to explore a diversity of lifeworlds – via the films from around the globe and in real life
by getting to know other schools’ students during screenings.”
Expressing his delight for the organisation of the first ever international science film festival in Bangladesh, Burkhard Ducoffre, Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, in his statement mentioned, “Leaving the stage of a least-developed-country is a huge achievement for Bangladesh and scientific research will be a key factor in this endeavor.”
The Science Film Festival presents scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be approached in various ways, he also said.
Dr Samiya Selim, in her speech said, “The importance of science communication is now more urgent than ever. This is why the Humboldt and Web of Life Science Festival is such a great
initiative that is addressing the importance of reaching younger
audience, and sharing the science behind climate change, plastic pollution, sustainability and other such critical issues.”
The Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In cooperation with local partners, it promotes
science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary
scientific, technological and environmental issues through film and television content with accompanying educational activities.
The Science Film Festival presents scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be fun. The event has grown considerably since its first
edition in 2005, becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide.
The first edition of the Science Film Festival Bangladesh takes place from October 12 to November 15 at different venues in Dhaka and Chattogram. Film screenings, tailor-made for each
age group, bring science themes closer to the life experience
of young learners of all ages.
In hands-on science activities, children from the age of 5 onwards up to university students can explore a rich universe: with
experiments, activities and discussions to explain scientific
phenomena and to open a participatory space for exploring state of the art science. Make sure you do not miss the screenings
at the Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, University of the Liberal Arts (ULAB), JAAGO Foundation’s schools, Maple Leaf International School, Mastermind International School Chittagong, Oxford International School and South Point School and College and the ones organised by the Children’s Television Foundation of Bangladesh.
