Mongla Port, the second largest seaport of Bangladesh, has earned Tk 319 crore revenue in the financial year 2023-24.
Revenue worth Tk 302 crore was collected in the financial year 2022-23, whereas Tk 319 crore has been earned in the financial year 2023-24, showing an increase of 28.55 per cent year-on-year, Mongla Port Authority (MPA) officials said.
Speaking to BSS, MPA deputy director Md Makruzzaman said, a total of 827 ships arrived in 2022-23 FY whereas a record of 846 ships arrived in the FY24, exceeded by 19 ships in comparison to the FY23.
In FY23, a total of 13,576 cars were imported while in the FY24, 15,340 cars were imported meaning a total of 1,764 more cars were imported in the FY24, he said.
A total of 99.05 lakh metric tonnes of cargo was handled in FY23 whereas 108.68 lakh metric tonnes of cargo was handled in the FY24, he said, adding that a total of 26,583 TEU containers were handled during FY23 while 31,044 TEU containers were handled in FY24.
He, however, said a total of 846 foreign commercial ships arrived here in FY24.
Contacted, Rear Admiral Shahin Rahman said on Tuesday, a total of 5 projects works including the modernisation of waste and oil removal management, procurement of vessels for Mongla Port, dredging of the Inner Bar of Pashur channel, upgradation of Mongla Port, Construction of two incomplete jetties at Mongla Port (through PPP) are going on in full swing.
The MPA chief added that Mongla Port is now playing a vital role in the overall economic development of the South Western region and the country.
