Mofazzal Haider Chowdhury’s 99th birth anniv today

Today is 99th birth anniversary of Mufazzal Haider Chaudhury. He was a distinguished Bengali essayist, scholar of Bangla literature, educator, and linguist, born in 1926 at Khalishpur village in Noakhali district. Losing his father at an early age, he excelled academically, securing fourth place in the matriculation examination under the University of Calcutta and later topping his classes in both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Bangla from the University of Calcutta and the University of Dhaka.
He was the first Muslim to achieve first class first in Bengali honors from Calcutta University and earned the prestigious Sahitya Bharati title from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. Chaudhury began his career at Pakistan Radio and Jagannath College before joining the University of Dhaka’s Department of Bengali, where he served as a lecturer and later as an external examiner. In 1957, he studied linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
