Moderate earthquake jolts Dhaka and northeastern Bangladesh

A moderate earthquake shook Dhaka and parts of northeastern Bangladesh in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering brief panic among residents but causing no reported damage or casualties.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake struck at 2:24 am and measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was near Moirang in Manipur, India, about 39 kilometers from the state capital, Imphal.

The tremor originated at a relatively shallow depth of 47 kilometers, which contributed to its widespread impact across northeastern Bangladesh and the capital, Dhaka.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed the seismic event, placing the epicentre at a latitude of 24.49°N.

Residents in Dhaka, Sylhet, and surrounding districts reported feeling light shaking. However, authorities have confirmed there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.
