The government has raised the supplementary duty on mobile phone and internet services, resulting in increased costs for consumers.
This development is part of the recently issued VAT and Supplementary Duty (Amendment) Ordinance-2025, which came into effect immediately after its publication.
The supplementary duty on mobile phone SIM cards has been increased from 20% to 23%, leading to higher expenses for users.
Additionally, for the first time, a 10% supplementary duty has been imposed on internet service providers (ISPs).
This move signifies a significant shift, as ISPs were previously exempt from such duties.
Furthermore, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has raised the supplementary duty on these services by an additional 3%, compounding the financial burden on consumers.
Consequently, for every Tk100 mobile recharge, users will now pay over Tk56 in taxes. This hike affects both internet and mobile services, making them more expensive for everyday users.
The new tax measures, implemented mid-fiscal year, are expected to impact millions of consumers who rely on mobile and internet services for communication, work, and education.
