DU, JU Correspondents :
The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement have strongly condemned and protested against the recent mob killings at Dhaka University (DU) and Jahangirnagar University (JU), which left two individuals dead.
The BNP’s student wing, JCD, addressed the issue at a press conference held at the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA), while the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement released a media statement expressing their outrage.
JCD leaders called for the immediate arrest of those responsible for the killings and demanded justice for the victims.
“Tofazzal was beaten by a group of students led by Jalal Ahmed, a student of the physics department who recently resigned from his position as deputy secretary of science and technology affairs of Chhatra League,” JCD president Rakibul Islam Rakib said, citing media reports during the press conference.
Rakib criticized the hall administration for its failure to maintain order, stating, “Some individuals, claiming to be ordinary students but acting as BCL terrorists, have taken over the halls. They form mobs and take the law into their own hands.”
JCD urged the university administration to take firm action and prevent such mobs from operating under the guise of student activism.
Condemning the pervasive culture of injustice, Rakibul Islam said, “The core aim of the student movement and our 16-year-long anti-fascist struggle is to eradicate injustice, corruption, and mismanagement. No matter the crime, killing someone is never justified.”
Rakib also emphasized that these incidents highlight deeper systemic problems on campus, saying, “Yesterday’s events show that student politics is not the root issue.
Instead, the murderous mentality fostered by years of fascist regimes has corrupted the system. A thorough reform is urgently needed.”
The Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement echoed these sentiments in their statement, calling the incidents “tragic” and a violation of basic human rights and principles.
They demanded swift prosecution of those responsible and urged the interim government, students, and citizens to take strong action against extrajudicial killings and mob justice while promoting a culture of social resistance.
“The alarming rise in extrajudicial killings and torture over the past 15 years underscores the significant failings of the country’s judicial system and the rule of law,” the movement added in its statement.
