`Mitford murder to be tried at speedy trial tribunal’

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has announced that the brutal killing of businessman Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka will be tried under the Speedy Trial Tribunal to ensure swift justice.

Asif Nazrul made the announcement on Saturday through a post on his verified Facebook page, stating that the government is determined to ensure a prompt trial of the horrific incident. Sohag was hacked and fatally struck on the head with a large stone in front of the main gate of Mitford Hospital around 6 pm last Wednesday. The gruesome murder sparked widespread outrage after video footage of the attack circulated on social media.

Asif Nazrul said that five suspects connected to the killing have already been arrested and that the police are conducting the investigation with utmost priority.

He assured that the perpetrators will be brought to exemplary justice through a speedy trial under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002.

Meanwhile, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman confirmed that the ninth accused in the case, Titon Gazi (32), was arrested during a raid on Friday night (11 July), bringing the total number of arrests in this case to five.

The law adviser reiterated that the government is committed to transferring the case to the Speedy Trial Tribunal without delay to ensure that those responsible for the barbaric killing receive the maximum punishment under the law.
