A massive fire that broke out at Jhilpar slum in Mirpur-12 in the capital has been brought under control after an hour.
Confirming the matter, Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Control Room Duty Officer Lima Khanam said, “The fire broke out around 12:45pm in the slum, and fire fighters received a tip off about the incident at 12:55pm.
On information, eight units of the fire service rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze around 2pm.
Details regarding the cause of the fire and the extent of damage could not be known instantly.
The Jhilpar Basti, like many other informal settlements, is home to numerous families who often live in precarious conditions. Fires in such areas pose a significant threat to life and property, necessitating swift and effective response measures.
Earlier, a woman and a child have been killed and another two injured after a massive fire broke out at Tejgaon’s Mollabari slum in the capital.
On January 7, a deadly fire has swept through parts of the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, destroying thousands of makeshift shelters for the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.
Even earlier in April, 2023, at least 2,000 houses have been destroyed in the deadly fire at the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya.
It is to be noted that as many as 102 people were killed and 281 others sustained burn injuries in 27,624 fire incidents across the country in 2023, according to Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters.
Besides, at least 24,102 fire incidents occurred across the country last year, according to statistics compiled by FSCD. A total of 98 people, including thirteen firefighters were killed and 407 others, including thirty FSCD staff, were injured in that fire incidents.
Earlier in 2021, there were about 21,601 fire incidents across the country.
