Staff Reporter :
Law Minister Advocate Anisul Haque and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman M Badiuzzaman have differed on findings of Padma Bridge graft case.
Anisul Haque at a dialogue ‘BBC-Bangladesh Sanglap’ held at BIAM auditorium in the city on Saturday night said they have collected all evidences on the Padma Bridge graft case from Canada.
“Two cases have been filed on the graft matter in our country and in Canada. The Canadian police have also arrested alleged
accused. The police and a court of Canada seized all the documents from their procession. They also took the detainees’ statement in this regard,” he said.
Anisul added: “I, as a prosecutor of the ACC, went to Canada twice for collecting the evidence but the Canadian government did not comply with those. Even after that, we have been able to collect all the evidence laid there.”
“I hope that we can successfully conclude the graft matter soon with our findings,” the Minister said this in response to a question of an audience.
On the other hand, when contacted, ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman told The New Nation yesterday that ACC could not collect any evidence from Canada.
It will not be possible to collect those evidences before the ending of the trial in the Canadian court against the alleged accused, he added.
When his attention was drawn to the Law Minister’s speech, the chairman said that Anisul Haque as prosecutor of the Commission visited Canada twice and collected some information. “But these are not sufficient to fight against the Padma Bridge graft case.”
The accused persons are Ramesh Shah, Cavin Wales and Mohammad Ismail, who were the officials of SNC-Lavalin, an international construction company.
On December 17 in 2012, ACC filed a case with Banani Police Station against seven people on charge of conspiracy of corruption during appointment of a consultancy firm for Padma Multi-Purpose Bridge Project.
The BBC-Bangladesh dialogue was also participated by former Education Minister Dr Osman Faruque, Transparency International of Bangladesh’s Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman and Bangladesh Development Research Organisation’s Senior Research Fellow Dr Naznin Ahmed. BBC Journalist Akbar Hossain moderated the session.
