A human chain was formed in Mongla and a memorandum was submitted to the Advisor of the Ministry of Railways demanding the launch of two inter-city trains “Mongla-Dhaka and Dhaka-Mongla” from the railway station of the port and tourist city of Mongla. The human chain programme was observed at the municipality premises at 10 am on Tuesday (July 08) under the banner of “Amara Monglabasi”.
During the human chain, the rally was presided over by environmental activist Md. Nur Alam Sheikh, President of the Mongla Citizens’ Association.
Md. Zulfiqar Ali, former Mayor of Mongla Pourashava and convener of Mongla Poura BNP committee, Md. Habib Master, President of the Mongla Port Merchants’ Association, Ahsan Habib Hasan, President of the Mongla Press Club, A Kader, former municipal councilor, Md. Anisur Raman, a Jamat leader and tourism businessman, Md. Emadul Hawlader of the Sundarbans Tour Operators Association, Md. Delwar Hossain, President of Majhimalla Union, etc. spoke at the human chain.
The speakers at the human chain told that Mongla is gradually becoming important nationally and internationally as a Sea Port and tourist center. Modern and direct rail connectivity has become essential for realizing the economic and tourism potential of this region adjacent to the port, EPZ, special economic zone, industrial zone and Sundarbans.
At present there is no direct intercity rail connection from Mongla to Dhaka. However, the country’s export-import trade is expanding rapidly through Mongla port and special economic zones, industrial parks and tourism are developing here. In this situation, the operation of Mongla-Dhaka and Dhaka-Mongla intercity trains has become essential.
