The government has implemented extensive measures in the capital to address any unexpected events marking New Year’s Eve.
In this regard, the Metro Rail authority has urged the public not to release sky lanterns or similar objects near the tracks on the day.
In a special circular issued on Monday, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) stated that the metro rail operates on high-voltage power lines from Uttara to Motijheel, with approximately 350,000 passengers using the service daily. Sky lanterns or similar objects could fall onto power lines, potentially causing serious and fatal accidents, it warned.
The circular further noted that the metro rail authority would take punitive action against any individual or organisation found responsible for such incidents.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has announced mobile court drives across the country, including Dhaka, to prevent the use of fireworks, crackers, and sky lanterns during New Year’s Eve celebrations.
In a press release issued on Friday, the ministry highlighted the dangers of fireworks and crackers, which contribute to noise and air pollution, while sky lanterns pose fire hazards and threaten biodiversity.
Under the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006, such activities are punishable offenses. Offenders may face up to one month of imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 5,000, or both for a first offense. Repeat offenders could face up to six months in prison and fines of up to Tk 10,000, the ministry added.
Additionally, the Dhaka University (DU) administration has announced restrictions on the entry of outsiders to the campus on the night of December 31, to ensure the safety and security of its students. According to a notice from the university’s Public Relations Office, these restrictions will be in effect from 7:00pm on December 31, 2024, until 5:00am on January 1, 2025.
