Business Report :

Power and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir on Saturday criticised the Matarbari 1200 MW Power Plant built at a cost of Tk57,000 crore in Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali, calling it a “luxury project”.
Speaking at a press conference at Cox’s Bazar Hill Town Circuit House, the adviser stated that the common people are not benefiting significantly from the power plant.
He noted that the original project concept included connections to deep-sea ports, industries, railways, and roads, which were not implemented.
He said the interim government will focus on smaller, more people-friendly projects in the future and withdraw from such large-scale projects.
He also addressed the plant’s current coal reserves, stating that it only has a 30-day supply. However, he assured that this crisis would be resolved soon.
Senior government officials, including Senior Secretary of Power Division Md Habibur Rahman, Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Md Nurul Alam, and Shipping Ministry Additional Secretary Sanjay Kumar Banik were present at the press conference. Yesterday, the adviser visited the Matarbari Coal Power Plant and inspected various development projects in the area, including the under construction deep-sea port and STM projects.
