An unprecedented mass transfer has taken place in Teknaf of southeastern Cox’s Bazar district following an extrajudicial killing of a retired army officer, Major Sinha. This might have happened from a deep-rooted sense of their overwhelming power for the political need of the government.
The police network for various crimes are not unconnected with local political leaders. The transfer of so many police was unusual but desperately required for breaking the chain crimes for impartial investigation of the killing of Major Sinha or other dangerous crimes freely committed over the years. Some police were closely associated with the drug business in that area like the political leaders of that area.
The two former IGPs have rightly assessed that such a step in no way meets the requirement of the rule of law. When police power abused politically then police find it impossible to remain true to the duty as law enforcers. The drug business is sapping the creative energy of our young ones. Their lives are ruined because they are unemployed and join the drug business as carriers and in the process they become victims as drug addicts. They are arrested and send to jail when it becomes necessary to shut them up for the protection of the top drug business leaders.
The close relationship between politics and police has to be severed. Police as law enforcers can be saved if the rule of law and strong judiciary work. But the government is using the police to keep itself in power destroying them as law enforcers. The judiciary is tolerated grudgingly.
