In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, tens of thousands gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon for the “March for Gaza,” calling on the Muslim world to sever all diplomatic and economic ties with Israel in protest against its ongoing military operations in Gaza.

The rally, attended by people from all walks of life, culminated in a declaration urging the cancellation of all existing agreements with Israel and calling for immediate international action to halt what was described as the genocide in Gaza.

Reading from the declaration, Mahmudur Rahman, Editor of Amar Desh, said Bangladesh has historically stood with global resistance movements, particularly in support of justice for the Palestinian people.

“Bangladesh, a nation whose very birth was rooted in resistance against oppression, must remain steadfast in the global pursuit of justice,” he stated. “We are not only a voice for humanity, but also a voice of faith.”

The declaration’s demands included the reinstatement of the “Except Israel” clause in Bangladeshi passports, the annulment of any agreements with Israeli-linked organisations, and the imposition of restrictions on the import of products from companies affiliated with Israel.

It also called for official condemnation of the persecution of Muslims and minorities in India, suggesting it was part of a broader ideological agenda.Further, the document proposed reforms in education to include Palestinian history, the legacy of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and narratives of resistance within national curricula.

Beginning at 3pm, the rally drew massive crowds from areas such as Shahbagh, Doel Chattar, and Nilkhet. Participants waved Bangladeshi and Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Boycott Israeli Products.”

The energy in the crowd intensified as Islamic scholars and political leaders took the stage, denouncing Israeli actions and affirming their support for the Palestinian cause.

Renowned Islamic scholar Mizanur Rahman Azhari addressed the audience with an emotive speech, stating:
“Though geographically distant, every heart here holds within it a Gaza, a Palestine, and an Al-Quds. Today’s gathering is proof of Bangladesh’s enduring love for Al-Aqsa and its unwavering commitment to Palestinian liberation.”

The rally was presided over by Muhammad Abdul Malek, Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. He was joined by a diverse group of religious scholars, academics, and activists. Sheikh Ahmadullah, Chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation, emphasised the nation’s unity:

“Our political and ideological views may differ, but in the face of injustice, we stand united. Today, the people of Bangladesh stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Gaza.”

The “March for Gaza” extended beyond protest, issuing a strong call for Muslim nations to take concrete steps, including cutting diplomatic ties with Israel and ceasing all support to entities connected to its government.

The declaration concluded with appeals for increased humanitarian aid and medical support for the people of Gaza, alongside government-led initiatives to boycott Israeli-linked products.

It portrayed Bangladesh as a country anchored in justice and solidarity, with a chance to take a principled stand on the global stage.

As evening descended upon Suhrawardy Udyan, chants of “Free Palestine” continued to echo across the grounds – a powerful reminder that in the heart of Dhaka, the call for justice knows no borders.
