Farmers in Manikganj district are anticipating a bumper onion production this season as the cultivation target has been surpassed, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
The DAE initially set a target of cultivating onions on 7,035 hectares of land with an expected yield of 117,062 tonnes. However, actual cultivation has reached 7,564 hectares, exceeding the target by 529 hectares.
Among the seven upazilas of the district, Harirampur, Ghior, and Shibalaya have recorded the highest onion cultivation.
Ahmed Ali, a 51-year-old farmer from Maluchi village in Shibalaya upazila, expressed optimism about the yield. “We are expecting a bumper production this season as we received quality seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs at the right time,” he said, adding that favorable weather conditions have also contributed to the positive outlook.
Dr. Robiah Noor Ahmed, Deputy Director of the DAE, highlighted that the land in Harirampur, Shibalaya, and Ghior is particularly suitable for onion cultivation.
He also noted that a significant portion of the onions harvested from these areas is supplied to various markets across the country, including Dhaka.
