A man was killed on Monday afternoon in a violent clash between rival drug gangs at Geneva Camp in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.
Police said Shah Alam died after being struck with a sharp weapon during fighting in Sector 7. Officers detained a man named Faisal with a machete in connection with the killing, according to Mohammadpur Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Mehedi Hasan.
Witnesses said the gangs hurled bricks, fought with sticks and crude weapons, and detonated crude bombs from late Sunday night into Monday morning. A woman was injured in a bomb blast on Sunday night.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan said the violence was linked to a turf war between drug dealers “Pichchi Raja” and “Buniya Sohel,” who were both recently released on bail.
“When police and the Army arrive, the clashes stop—but they resume as soon as security forces leave,” a local schoolteacher said.
Police said the situation is now under control.
