Authorities at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport have detained a passenger after he was caught smuggling 2.4 kg of gold, melted down and hidden within his clothing.
According to Barun Das, a preventive officer at the Customs House Dhaka, the man arrived at the airport around 11:15 am on Friday aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dubai via Sylhet.
Acting on a tip-off that the passenger might be carrying gold in paste form concealed in his garments, customs officials conducted a thorough inspection. They found the man’s clothes unusually heavy and subsequently seized four pairs of underwear, one pair of trousers, and three T-shirts.
The clothing was then burned and chemically processed, revealing a gold-like powder weighing approximately 2,560 grams. The recovered gold is estimated to be worth around Tk 50 million.
