The Interim Government Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M. Sakhawat Hossain to the Ministry of Shipping and Labor and Employment on Monday said that Bhairab Port is very old.
The development of this port is essential. How to make Bhairab an international port is being worked on. World Bank has many projects, among which Bhairab is one of them. He said this while talking to reporters while visiting the Bhairab port area.
Adviser Sakhawat Hossain said, in the meantime, a project financed by the World Bank is going to be implemented for the development of Bhairab port. Three pontoons will be constructed at Bhairab Port for launching, speedboats and cargo movement through this project at a cost of Tk 93 crore. The work order will go out today. Work will start in 10 days.
The work will be completed by December next year. In case of exception, the allotment will be refunded. Once the project is completed, goods will move through the belt. After the completion of the entire project, the face of the region including Bhairab will change.
Brigadier General (Retd.) Sakhawat Hossain requested the residents of Bhairab to accept the temporary inconvenience during the project work. He also said, the scope of employment will be bigger after the completion of the project. Sakhawat Hossain said that some businesses in the port area will have to be moved if necessary for the implementation of the project, and the owners of the legal premises will get compensation from the government. Attempts will be made to compensate the traders.
After visiting Bhairab Port, Sakhawat Hossain visited Ashuganj river Port. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Arif Ahmed, Project Director Ayub Ali, Bhairab UNO Shabnam Sharmin and others were with him at that time”.
