The harvesting of jute is on in full swing in the district. A total of 36700 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in all four upazilas of the district with a production target of 451728 bales of jute in the current season.
The DAE official said, out of this, 36700 hectares land were brought under jute cultivation in the district this season. Of this 10,215 hectares in Sadar upazila, 9300 hectares in Sreepur upazila,3,780 hectares in Shalikha upazila, 10772 hectares in Mohammadpur upazila of the district.
A target of 451728 bales of jute production has been set from 36700 hectares of land, he said.
The DAE official said, cultivation of jute has been increasing every year here as the growers are getting fair prices for their products, adding that more than ninety six percent harvesting of jute has already been completed in the district. Jute seeds were given among 18000 farmers free of cost in the district.
Aziz Sheikh, a farmer of Parnanduali village under Sadar Upazila said, “We are interested in cultivating jute because it gives us cash money during the lean period”. Sticks of jute are also used for different household purposes including fencing and cooking ,he added.
Another farmer Bablu Shikder of Kapashati village under sadar upazila said,” I had cultivated jute on four bighas of land this year, adding that all of them were cut off and I am expecting reasonable prices”.
DAE officials said, farmers are now busy with harvesting and rotting-retting techonology to insure quality of the fibre for high price.
Deputy Director Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Dr. Yachin Ali said, a total of 36700 hectares of land brought under jute cultivation in the district this season. Jute seeds were given among 18000 farmers free of cost in the district. Ninety six percent harvesting of jute has already been completed in the district. Farmers are interested in jute cultivation as they get good prices for their products.
