Madhukhali (Faridpur) Correspondent :
A target of 68 metric tonnes of onion seeds has been set to produce this year in Madhukhali, Faridpur which is amounting around Tk. 25 crore at the current market price. Farmers say that if they get a fair price this time like last season, they will be able to sell the seeds for a record amount of money. This will bring a smile to the faces of onion seed farmers known as ‘black gold’.
According to Madukhali Upazila Agriculture Extension Department, the farmers will prepare the seed bed next November. Onions will reach the consumer’s doorstep by the end of March.
Nuruzzaman, an onion seed grower in Madhukhali upazila, said that many people in the area are now cultivating seeds. He has a small piece of land and he is also cultivating onion seeds in his land hoping it would be a good production.
Farmer Anand Sarkar of Kalaikanda village of Korkadi union of Madukhali upazila said that last year I cultivated onion seeds on 5 acres of land and got a good price. This year I cultivated seven acres of land. He said, there will be better production than last time. Hopefully if we get even one lakh taka per mana then it will be beneficial for us.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Alvir Rahman said that the country wants to be self-sufficient in onion production. So the planting target has been increased. Incentives have also been given this year. This year, the target for onion seed cultivation was 170 hectares. The production target has been fixed at 68 metric tons.
