As the national election approaches, Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Md. Asadul Islam, also known as Lt. Col. Azad, who is expecting nomination from BNP for Tangail-1 constituency (Madhupur-Dhanbari), has alleged that he has been facing a wave of opposition propaganda.
His political rivals are spreading misinformation and allegations against him to undermine his candidacy, said Azad, who led the July Uprising movement from the front in his area.
Since Azad launched his campaign, opponents within and outside his party have circulated accusations on social media labelling him a fascist.
On August 5, during a victory procession commemorating the first anniversary of the fall of the Hasina government, opposition forces attempted to block Azad’s march.
Despite provocations, his supporters maintained calm to preserve party unity. Nonetheless, his office was attacked, and banners bearing his image were torn down.
Locals note that Azad comes from a politically active BNP family. His elder brother, Ashraful Islam Masud, serves as joint secretary of the upazila BNP and was previously the general secretary of Mirzabari Union BNP.
