UNB, Dhaka :
Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain expressed his resentment seeing the judicial functions at Dhaka lower courts on Tuesday. The Chief Justice voiced the displeasure during his surprise visit to the lower courts.
During the visit, Muzammel Hossain observed a few judicial proceedings sitting beside the presiding judges in the courtrooms.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice sought explanation from the judges why the next date of hearing set after a long gap and why such a poor number of cases came up in the day’s cause list for hearing
and why the production of the witnesses look scanty?
The judges concerned failed to satisfy the Chief Justice over the issues he raised, court sources said.
During the visit, Muzammel Hossain found some courts nonfunctional due to the absence of judges as well as the engaged lawyers.
While addressing the judges, the Chief Justice asked them to dispose the pending cases of speedily to reduce the heavy judicial backlog.
Muzammel Hossain called upon the lawyers to help the courts for the quick disposal of cases. “Justice can’t be ensured without the assistance of lawyers,” he remarked.
About the scanty production of witnesses in criminal cases, the Chief Justice said the responsibility lies with the police in this regard. The judges concerned should take steps to ensure the accountability of the designated police who fails to produce the witnesses before the court, he said.
