The government should adopt a long-term plan to solve problems of the region’s thousands of ethnic community people for their self-reliance, speakers at a seminar here said.They said the normal development programmes and approaches don’t yield the desired results as empowerment of the disadvantaged communities has become indispensable to make them aware about their rights. They were addressing the seminar styled “National Budget and Appropriate Budgetary Allocation to All Public Services for Ethnic People” held at Moonlight Garden Convention Center in Rajshahi on Friday. Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, addressed the programme as chief guest with Rabindra Nath Saren, President of Jatiya Adibashi Parishad (JAP), in the chair.
Deputy Director of Rajshahi Divisional Adibashi Cultural Academy Shamim Akhter, JAP Presidium Member Anil Marandi, Chairman of SUPRO Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Freedom Fighter Barjahan Ali Shahjahan and Ethnic Leader Sumila Tudu also spoke.
In his keynote presentation, Manik Saren, Information and Research Secretary of JAP, called for freeing the ethnic people from all sorts of disparities, repression and harassment. He also stressed the need for enhancing budgetary allocation for elevating the condition of the disadvantaged people. Lawmaker Badsha, Convener of Adibashi Affairs Parliamentary Caucus, said ensuring social justice towards the ethnic groups in the country’s northwest region including its vast Barind tract has become the demand of time for elevation of their living and livelihood conditions alongside their mainstreaming.
He mentioned that the land related problems of the plain aboriginal people should be resolved on an urgent basis as the problems are being aggravated day by day posing a serious threat to their livelihood.
Expressing his solidarity with all the demands raised by the ethnic leaders in the seminar the lawmaker said the government should be positive towards establishing their rights on land.
He viewed that the ethnic people are not the isolated communities in the country. So, the government has no intention to keep them behind. For this reason, the government has been working relentlessly for improving their livelihood.
