‘Livestock sector now key pillar to ensure ample animal protein’

Staff Reporter :

Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus highlighted that Bangladesh’s livestock sector has become a key pillar in ensuring sufficient animal protein-essential for building a healthy, capable and resilient nation.

Bangladesh is set to observe National Livestock Week 2025 for the first time, with nationwide programmes taking place from tomorrow through December 2.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus released a message marking the occasion.
He said the country is celebrating the inaugural National Livestock Week 2025 under the theme, “Indigenous breeds, modern technology: Livestock will drive development forward.”

He said the sector also plays an important role in creating low-investment jobs for marginal communities, advancing women’s empowerment, expanding commercial livestock farms, supporting various related industries and contributing to foreign currency earnings.

According to him, development initiatives implemented by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), along with rising private sector investments, have significantly increased the country’s production of eggs, milk and meat, enabling Bangladesh to meet its animal protein needs.

However, he also cautioned that the sector still faces major challenges, including climate change impacts, feed shortages, antibiotic resistance, safe use of animal byproducts, zoonotic disease control, and managing emerging and re-emerging diseases.

He said the interim government formed after the July uprising is working diligently to overcome these hurdles, and the weeklong observance will help reinforce these efforts.
Professor Yunus added that newly developed livestock technologies will encourage entrepreneurship among marginal farmers and play a crucial role in the country’s overall progress.
