Srimangal Correspondent :
December 6, is Srimangal Liberation Day. On this day in 1971, the freedom fighters liberated Srimangal from the enemy by defeating the Pakistani occupying forces and their allies.
The flag of victory flew in Srimangal, the famous tea capital and tourist city, ending nine months of bloody war, torture, genocide and humiliation.
The city was filled with joy, joy of freedom and the indomitable spirit of independence.
During the Liberation War, Srimangal was strategically very important. With its vast tea plantation area, hilly terrain, and the junction of railway lines and highways, it was one of the strongholds of the invading forces.
Therefore, liberating this area was a big challenge for the freedom fighters. From the last week of November, the freedom fighters intensified their attacks on the invaders with a planned war strategy.
In the face of the brave fighting of the freedom fighters on various battlefields, the cooperation of the local people, and the continuous operations of the guerrillas, the Pakistani army was forced to leave Srimangal in the early hours of December 6.
As the freedom fighters entered the city, thousands of people took to the streets, embracing each other and shedding tears of joy.
That day became an unforgettable chapter in the history of Srimangal.
In various places in Srimangal, especially in the tea plantation area, the atrocities of the war are still there.
Many innocent people were taken away; none returned. The stories of the suffering of those terrible days still emerge in the killing fields, martyrs’ memorials and the accounts of local freedom fighters.
