Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali has said law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to tackle any acts of violence, including hartals.

“The DMP will take strict action against any attempts of disruption by the Awami League’s students wing Chhatra League, ensuring public safety and order,” he said while briefing reporters after inspecting the Ekushey Book Fair ground in Dhaka on Friday.

He said, “If any banned organisation, including the Chhatra League, attempts to instigate violence through hartals or other activities, they will be met with strict suppression.”

The DMP commissioner said members from intelligence and Rapid Action Battalion will remain deployed at the fair to ensure security of the visitors, along with the DMP members.

The area spanning TSC to Doel Chattra will remain open and shut intermittently and security measures surrounding Dhaka University will be beefed up, he said.

Moreover, no heavy vehicles will be allowed to operate in the DU area during the fair, he said.
