Nilphamari Correspondent :

Police have arrested Sajjad Alam Sainul, the acting chairman of Kundupukur Union Parishad under Nilphamari Sadar upazila and president of Ward No. 3 of the local Awami League unit. He was detained from his locality around 9 p.m. on Saturday during a police operation.

According to local sources, a few days after the formation of the interim government, a large procession organized by the banned ISKCON group took place in Nilphamari town as part of a nationwide program.

A significant number of people from the Hindu community joined the rally.

It is alleged that Sajjad Alam Sainul personally encouraged people from Kundupukur and nearby areas to attend the rally, arranging vans and three-wheelers to transport Hindu participants to the town.

Locals claimed that hundreds of people joined the procession under his directive.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion and concern in the area. Local political circles say that the renewed activities of such controversial figures following the formation of the interim government have raised questions about law and order.

Recently, the government officially banned the ISKCON organization on charges of religious extremism and attempts to incite communal tension.

Notably, Sajjad Alam Sainul was charged in the 2011 murder case of journalist Md. Zahurul Islam (Case No: SC/121/12), which is currently awaiting judgment at the Nilphamari Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2.

Another case against him, filed by Moshior Rahman, is also ongoing at Nilphamari Sadar Police Station.

Locals further alleged that Sainul has long been aided by Abdul Jalil, a BNP activist from Ward No. 3 known as part of the “Awami family,” and by Jasidul Jasi, his brother-in-law and an associate without formal party position.

According to case documents, Sainul, Jasi, and 20 others attacked journalist Zahurul Islam with a sharp weapon, inflicting fatal head injuries and blocking rescue attempts until police intervened and took several seriously injured people to the hospital.

Another local named Abdul Gani, who has switched political affiliations multiple times and is currently associated with the BNP, is also known to have close ties with Sainul.Sources say several other locals have recently become active in BNP politics in association with these individuals.
