In the face of student protests, the Ministry of Education has issued a notification releasing Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Vice Chancellor Muhammad Mashud and Pro Vice Chancellor Sheikh Shariful Alam. They will now return to their respective departments.
The notification was issued on Friday, April 25. ( The Copies of the Notification were enclosed herewith).
Earlier, the government had said that the process of releasing these two is underway.
In this regard, on Wednesday, April 23, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had said in a press release that the process of releasing the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university has been initiated in order to resolve the crisis that has arisen in the context of recent events at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology and to start educational activities quickly. A search committee will be formed immediately to make new appointments to these two positions. Meanwhile , one of the senior professors will be temporarily assigned the role of Vice-Chancellor in order to continue the regular activities of the university. This information has been given by the Ministry of Education.
On February 18, more than a hundred students were injured in a clash at KUET over the demand to stop student politics. The next day, students locked all academic buildings, including the administrative building. That afternoon, a syndicate meeting decided to stop all political activities at KUET.
On February 25, all residential halls were closed indefinitely.
Then, from the afternoon of April 13, students took a position in front of the administrative building demanding the opening of the residential halls. Then, the university syndicate meeting decided to expel 37 students in connection with the February 18 clash.
In protest, students from various universities in the country, along with KUET students, started a movement. They demanded the resignation of the KUET Vice-Chancellor. In the face of the students’ movement, the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor were removed.
