The authorities at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) expelled five students and issued warnings to 32 others after a violent clash that occurred seven months earlier. The expulsions were announced on Sunday following a thorough investigation into the incident. The affected students received varying disciplinary actions, with one student receiving a 1-year suspension and the others expelled for six months.
The university’s student discipline committee made the final decision, noting that the five students involved in the February 18 incident had prompted the inquiry. An emergency Syndicate meeting six days later established the investigation framework.
Among those disciplined, MSc student Salim Sadman received a 12-month suspension. The students cited come from different departments: Omar Bin Hossain (Leather Engineering), Shanto Islam and Mohammad Hridoy (Textile Engineering), and Safwan Ahmed Ifaz (Electronics and Communication Engineering).
In preparing the final rulings, the disciplinary committee reviewed the inquiry report, available footage, and responses gathered between August 25 and September 21. The clash had previously resulted in a temporary suspension of 37 students, a measure that was later rescinded after student protests. Subsequently, KUET’s vice-chancellor and pro-vice chancellor were removed on April 26 amid the unrest.
