Anwarul Azim Anar, Member of Parliament for Jhenaidah-4, has been killed after two previous failed attempts, according to Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, Additional Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Addressing a press conference at the Minto Road DB office in the capital on Saturday afternoon, DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid disclosed, “The killers had attempted twice before finally succeeding in the third round. However, the specific motive behind the murder remains unclear yet.”
He went on to suggest possible motives, stating, “There can be many motives. Maybe past enmity, maybe related to financial transactions, may also have political issues.” Emphasising the ongoing investigation, he added, “We will judge and analyse everything.”
Harun-or-Rashid cautioned against premature conclusions, noting the possibility that the accused individuals may not provide accurate information during the investigation.
Meanwhile, in a development highlighting the transnational aspects of the case, a team from the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police will visit India to investigate the murder of MP Anar.
The DB chief announced that he and several officers will depart for India on Saturday or Sunday morning to assist in the investigation.
Anwarul Azim Anar, who mysteriously disappeared after visiting a friend in West Bengal, was later found murdered in a high-rise residential building in Kolkata. Blood traces were discovered at the scene, although his body has not been found.
The involvement of Indian authorities adds complexity to the case, with a team from Bangladesh collaborating with Indian police over the past few years.
Recent developments in the case include the arrest of several suspects, including Syed Amanullah Aman, alias Shimul Bhuiyan, Faisal Ali Sahaji, alias Tanveer Bhuiyan, and Shilasti Rahman.
Another suspect, Jihad Howladar, alias Butcher Jihad, has been remanded by the court in Barasat, India, for further interrogation.
It is noteworthy that in 2008, Interpol issued a notice against Anwarul Azim Anar in connection with several criminal cases, including arms and explosives, with several pending cases in Jhenaidah and Chuadanga.
