There is no relief in the vegetable market in Khulna. Although the prices of a handful of vegetables have come down in the rising market for the past few weeks, they are out of reach for buyers. In the rising market, the prices of marine and river fish have also increased by Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kg in a week.
On Friday, the above picture was seen in Khulna’s New Market Kacha Bazar, Notun Bazar, Gallamari Bazar and Daulatpur Bazar.
Although the supply of all types of vegetables in the market is normal, the prices of no vegetables have come down in the last one week except for a couple. Except for gourd and papaya, no vegetable is available below Tk 70. Currently, brinjal is being sold at Tk 120 per kg.
Besides, shrimp is being sold at 80 taka, patal at 70 taka, ucche at 80 taka, barbati at 90 taka, onion at 80 taka and green chilli at 160-200 taka per kg. Tomato is being sold at the highest price of 180 taka and cauliflower at 250 taka per kg. However, some relief has been seen in the gourd and papaya market. Gourd is being sold at 60 taka per piece and papaya at least 35 taka per kg.
Sweety Hasan, a housewife who came to the market to market, said, “Every week I hope the prices will come down, but I have to return from the market disappointed. The prices of everything are still high.”
Compared to the vegetable market, the prices in the fish market are even higher. The prices of marine and river fish have increased by 30-50 taka per week. Tangra and Parsha fish are being sold at 600-800 taka per kg, Rui and Katla fish at 300 taka, and Jatka Hilsa at 800-1000 taka per kg. And the price of large hilsa is beyond the reach of buyers, with one kilogram of hilsa being sold for 2100-2200 taka.
Shahidul Islam, a seller at Rupsha Fish Market, said, “The supply of fish has increased slightly, but less than the demand. Fishermen were not able to go to the deep sea last week. In a few days, the supply will increase and the price will come down a bit.
