BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is set to attend her first in-person political programme in six years at an event organized by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal on December 21.

Muktijoddha Dal President Syed Ishtiaque Aziz Ulfat announced that the gathering of freedom fighters will take place at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Saturday, December 21, with Khaleda Zia as the chief guest.

Ulfat, along with BNP standing committee member Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, met Khaleda on Saturday night to formally invite her.

“She has agreed to join the event, provided her health permits. We are hopeful that Madam will be able to attend the programme,” Ulfat said.

Khaleda’s last political programme was on February 4, 2018, when she presided over an extended BNP meeting in Dhaka. Just three days later, she was sentenced to prison in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

According to Ulfat, freedom fighters from across the country will gather on December 21 to commemorate Victory Day.

On November 21, Khaleda made her first public appearance in six years at the Armed Forces Day reception at Senakunja, following her conditional release.

Khaleda Zia has been battling multiple serious health conditions, including liver cirrhosis, and heart, lung, kidney, and eye issues.

Since her release, she has received ongoing treatment at Evercare Hospital under a medical board led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.
