BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is suffering from acute respiratory distress due to a chest infection that has spread to her heart and lungs. A source close to her medical team confirmed that she is being monitored around the clock.

Khaleda Zia on Monday appealed to the countrymen to pray for her swift recovery and good health.

BNP media cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan informed journalists that Khaleda Zia had sought prayers from the nation, quoting BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.

Begum Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment under the continuous supervision of a medical board at Evercare Hospital since her admission on Sunday night. She remains under strict observation after being brought in with severe breathing difficulties.

According to doctors, the 79-year-old former premier is experiencing acute respiratory distress due to a chest infection that has spread to her heart and lungs. A source close to her medical team confirmed that she is being monitored around the clock.

Khaleda Zia was admitted around 8 pm on Sunday and is currently under the care of specialist physician Prof. Shahabuddin Talukder.

Following her admission, several diagnostic tests were carried out, and she was immediately started on antibiotics along with other required medication. One member of the medical board stated, “She is suffering from a chest infection.

She already had existing cardiac issues, and the infection has now impacted both her heart and lungs, causing serious breathing problems.”

Another board member, requesting anonymity, said additional tests were completed on Monday, and the team will continue to monitor her condition closely over the next 24 hours.

BNP sources said her son Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman are overseeing updates on her health from London, while Syeda Shamila Rahman – wife of her late son Arafat Rahman – is present at the hospital in Dhaka.

Approaching the age of 80, Khaleda Zia has long battled several chronic illnesses, including liver cirrhosis, kidney complications, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.
