BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has urged for unity as the enemies of Bangladesh are actively plotting to undo the gains achieved through mass uprisings.
Speaking virtually from London at BNP’s extended meeting on Thursday, she stressed the need for unity in the fight against autocratic rule.
She said, “I pay my respects to those who were martyred in the prolonged struggle against fascism and those who lost their lives in the brutal July mass killing carried out by oppressive fascist rulers. I also extend my sincere sympathy to the injured.”
The country was going through a critical time, she noted, “With your combined efforts and the student movement, the fascist ruler has been ousted. An interim government has been formed. The people’s expectation from them is to complete the necessary minimum reforms to repair the state and organize an election that is acceptable to all.
“Although I’m in the UK for treatment, I’m always beside you. I convey my gratitude to those who have fought for the last 15 years for my release. The country is going through a crisis. Don’t do anything which jeopardises your achievements. The whole country is eagerly waiting for a democratic change. We have to let go of our narrow mindset and work for the greater good of the nation.”
She acknowledged the efforts of the party’s acting chairman in keeping BNP strong in her absence along with senior leaders and those in attendance.
She thanked them all, saying she believed they would remain committed to the ideals of martyred president Ziaur Rahman and work together for success in the upcoming election.
“For 15 years, you fought tirelessly for democracy and my release. Many of our comrades sacrificed their lives, suffered persecution and continue to seek justice in court under the burden of around 125,000 false cases. Your sacrifices will not be forgotten by the party or the nation.
“Do not do anything that would undermine our long struggle and sacrifices. We must always remember president Ziaur Rahman’s words: ‘The party is greater than the individual, and the nation is greater than the party,'” Khaleda added.
The BNP chief said the people of Bangladesh, particularly the youth, are eager for meaningful democratic change. She urged everyone to rise above petty divisions and prioritise the greater good of the country and its people.
She warned that those aligned with fascist forces and enemies of Bangladesh are still engaged in conspiracies to undo the achievements of the July uprising. Emphasising the need for unity, Khaleda Zia called for unwavering solidarity with the people to counter these threats. She stressed that only through collective effort can a truly democratic Bangladesh be built.
