Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, met with Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission, on Wednesday to discuss the commission’s ongoing efforts to foster inclusive democratic dialogue in Bangladesh.
The meeting took place at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and centered on the commission’s strategic roadmap to draft a national charter aimed at laying the foundation for a democratic future.
Professor Riaz briefed Kennedy on the progress of initial consultations with political parties, noting that preparations are now underway to launch broader national dialogues involving a wide range of stakeholders.
“A democratic state is essential for safeguarding citizens’ rights, ensuring the rule of law, and upholding an independent judiciary capable of delivering justice at the grassroots level,” Riaz emphasised.
Kennedy welcomed the initiative, calling it a “timely and vital effort” to build political and civic consensus. She commended the commission’s inclusive approach and extended her organisation’s full support and best wishes.
Also present at the meeting were Catherine Cooper, Asia Staff Attorney at RFK Human Rights, and Angelita Baeyens, Vice-President for International Advocacy and Judicial Proceedings.
