Keep Kuakata, Cox’s Bazar beaches clean during tourist season: Environment Adviser

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has instructed the authorities concerned to take effective measures to maintain cleanliness at Kuakata and Cox’s Bazar beaches during the upcoming tourist season.

She gave the directive while presiding over a meeting on budget implementation at the Department of Environment (DoE) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Saturday.

To ensure cleanliness in the peak tourist months of November and December, the adviser emphasised the deployment of local volunteers to collect waste on a daily basis.

She also underscored the importance of setting up an adequate number of dustbins throughout tourist areas to encourage proper waste disposal by visitors.

“Preparations must begin now to keep tourist destinations clean,” she said, adding that awareness must be raised so that tourists act responsibly towards the environment.
Rizwana also instructed the relevant officials to intensify anti-polythene drives and scale up public awareness campaigns to curb environmental pollution.

On the issue of wildlife conservation, the adviser directed the Forest Department to ensure that elephant corridors remain unobstructed.

She recommended planting elephant-friendly trees in forests and along corridors, while replacing species that elephants tend to avoid in rural areas.
Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed and Director General of the Department of Environment Dr Md Kamruzzaman, among other senior officials, were present at the meeting.
