The state-run nine jute mill workers’ strike entered fourth day yesterday (Wednesday) demanding payment of their dues.
They will also observe road and rail blockade programme from 4:00pm to 7:00pm today (Thursday), said Md Murad Hossain, Convener of Jute Mill Workers League of Khulna-Jashore region.
Workers’ wages of 11 weeks and other employees’ salary of four months are overdue.
In Dhaka, hundreds of workers of Latif Bawany Jute Mill and Karim Jute Mill took to the
Demra Street around 6:00am with sticks. They barricaded the local Sultana Kamal Road. Their demonstrations have already aggravated the traffic condition in the surrounding areas.
The workers are pressing for arrears of two months and a fresh wage board.
They also demanded that the government procure raw jute directly instead of private channels, said Abdul Quddus, one of the workers, taking part in the agitation programme.
“We are not being paid for two months. How will we survive with our families?” he asked. “I borrowed money from a friend to buy rice,” he added.
Meanwhile, workers of state-run jute mills have called a strike for indefinite period from next Monday (May13), vowing to press home their longstanding demands.
The workers are set to block the roads and railways from 4:00pm to 7:00pm each day of the strike.
The decision was taken at a meeting of Jute Mill Sramik League, CBA and Non-CBA at the CBA office of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) in Dhaka Wednesday afternoon. The protest programme will be observed in nine jute mills in Khulna-Jashore region, said Alim Jute Mill’s CBA President Saiful Islam Titu.
The demands include paying due salaries and allowances, implementation of the wage commission, sufficient fund allocation for jute sector, reappointing the sacked workers and making the appointments permanent.
Earlier, it was decided in a meeting with the Ministry of Jute and Textiles and Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation that the outstanding wages will be paid within April 25. But the promise was not fulfilled. On April 2, workers of state-owned jute mills observed a 72-hour strike in Khulna region to press home their nine-point demand.
