Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul has said that the trial of the brutal murder of Abu Sayed will be completed during the tenure of the interim government.
He made this remark on Wednesday while addressing a discussion marking the martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Abu Sayed and ‘July Martyrs’ Day’ at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur.
Dr. Nazrul said, “Many people have lost their lives in democratic movements, but none in the manner Abu Sayed did. Inspired by his ultimate sacrifice, over a thousand youths have laid down their lives for the nation. But I ask myself can we ever truly acknowledge and honor such an immense sacrifice? Honestly, we cannot, but we are trying our best.”
He further stated that two police constables who were clearly responsible for Abu Sayed’s killing have already been arrested and that the trial process has begun.
“I can assure you that the proceedings are moving forward at full pace and without any negligence. I firmly believe that you will witness justice for Abu Sayed’s murder under our government’s administration,” he said.
Taking a swipe at the previous administration, Dr. Nazrul remarked, “Sheikh Hasina used to invoke her father’s assassination in every speech. Even then, it took her three and a half years to begin the trial for his killing. We have not come to deliver a perfunctory trial like that. We are committed to ensuring a trial that will be credible in the eyes of the entire world.”
Recalling the tragic incident, the Adviser said, “I did not see Abu Sayed’s death on the 16th. I saw it on the following day, 17 July, in the afternoon. As a guardian, I could not sit idle knowing a young man could die in such a way.
It made me feel we have nothing left to fear. Abu Sayed stood for truth and justice and he was ready to embrace death for it.”
