BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas has accused the interim government of displaying political bias, claiming it is “favouring one party while carrying another on its shoulders.”

Speaking at a silent march and brief rally in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka, on Friday, Abbas cautioned the authorities against marginalising the BNP.

“Do not proceed with an agenda to eliminate the BNP. We are cooperating with you. Announce the election soon, and peace will return to the country,” he said.

“Otherwise, it will appear that you have long been orchestrating unrest in the country.”

The event was organised in remembrance of the martyrs of the July-August mass uprising and was led by the BNP’s women’s wing, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.

The silent march commenced at 5 p.m., with law enforcement maintaining a heightened security presence throughout the procession.

Expressing concern over what he described as the politicisation of the July movement, Abbas said, “Some are attempting to build their political standing by exploiting the sacrifices made during the July uprising. The martyrdom is being commercialised; political trading is underway.

If those martyrs were alive today, they would be disheartened. The causes for which they gave their lives are no longer being upheld.”

He further criticised unnamed political groups for using the legacy of the martyrs for political gain. “These individuals did not die for the benefit of any particular party or figure; they gave their lives for the freedom and rights of the people of this country,” he said.

“We have fought, struggled, been imprisoned-but we have not sought rewards. Yet some are now trying to build political careers by capitalising on the July movement.”

Abbas also rebuked attempts to equate the BNP with the ruling Awami League. “Please watch your words.

Refrain from making inflammatory remarks that could provoke public outrage,” he warned. “The BNP is not a party of conflict; it is a party that believes in democracy and stands with the people.”

The rally was organised by Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP, with the unit’s convenor Rafiqul Alam Majnu presiding. The event was conducted by member secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin.

Other prominent attendees included Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Amiruzzaman Khan Shimul, Abdus Sattar Patwari, Habibur Rashid Habib, Ishraq Hossain, Arifa Ruma, and Nadia Pathan Papon.
