Judiciary’s separate secretariat at final stage: SC Registrar General

Supreme Court (SC) Registrar General Mohammad Habibur Rahman Siddiquee today said the country’s judiciary is on the verge of having its own separate secretariat, as the draft ordinance for establishing it has already received policy approval.
“The Advisory Council has already given its policy approval to the draft ordinance for establishing the Supreme Court Secretariat. Now, the judiciary stands at the threshold of having a separate secretariat,” he told a workshop titled ‘Strengthening Investigative Journalism for Supreme Court Reporters’ at BRAC CDM, Rajendrapur, Gazipur.
The daylong workshop was organised by the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC) in partnership with the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and UNDP, with support from the Embassy of Sweden. A total of 40 members of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum (SRF) took part in the workshop to enhance their skills in covering judicial and legal affairs.
“Investigative journalism is one of the strongest tools of democracy. Journalists play a crucial role in ensuring justice and accountability. Court reporters are vital partners of our justice system — through them, people learn about court proceedings, justice and human rights,” Siddiquee said.
He hoped the workshop would help SRF members become more skilled, aware and professional in conducting investigative reporting.
NIMC Director General Muhammad Hiruzzaman, NDC, presided over the function, while UNDP Bangladesh Senior Advisor (Rule of Law, Justice and Security) Romana Schweiger attended as special guest.
Hiruzzaman lauded the media’s role in promoting accountability and said NIMC would continue supporting journalists’ capacity building. Romana Schweiger noted that as Bangladesh advances in judicial reform, the media’s role becomes ever more vital in shaping public understanding and promoting transparency.
Conducted by NIMC Assistant Director Mukbul Hossain, the workshop was also attended by NIMC Directors Rahima Akter and Parvin Sultana Rabbi, UNDP Bangladesh Head of Communication Md Abdul Qaiyum, NIMC Deputy Director Mohammad Abu Sadeq and Assistant Director Hafsa Akter Sonia, among others.
SRF President Masudur Rahman Rana and General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Dalim thanked the organisers for arranging the workshop and hoped such cooperation would continue in the future.
