After more than three decades, Jahangirnagar University has announced the long-awaited schedule for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election, which will take place on July 31, 2025.
The announcement came early Thursday morning at 12:15 AM from Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kamrul Ahsan, during a press briefing held at the university’s administrative council room. Immediately following the VC’s declaration, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Prof. M Maniruzzaman of the English Department unveiled the full election schedule.
As per Article 8 of the JUCSU Constitution, elections for both the JUCSU and the Hall Parliaments will be held simultaneously on July 31, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The vice-chancellor also addressed issues surrounding the July Uprising, stating that all teachers, students, officials, and staff involved in the campus violence would be identified and brought to justice by June 29.
CEC Maniruzzaman provided additional key dates:
May 12: Draft voter list and draft code of conduct to be published
May 21: Deadline for objections to the voter list and feedback on the draft code
June 30: Final voter list and code of conduct to be released
July 1–3: Nomination papers can be collected
July 1–7: Nomination paper submission window
July 9: Draft candidate list to be published after scrutiny
July 14: Final day to withdraw candidacy
July 15: Final list of candidates to be announced
July 31: Election Day
The schedule follows a 10-hour deliberation held on Tuesday evening at the Senate Hall, where student representatives from all departments and active student organizations met to discuss the electoral environment. Following the meeting, the university administration committed to announcing the election date at 5:30 AM on Wednesday.
Since its founding in 1972, JU has held only eight JUCSU elections, with the last occurring in 1992 under the BNP government. That year, Masud Hasan Talukder was elected Vice President and Shamsul Tabriz became General Secretary.
However, on July 29, 1993, following a student attack on the Teachers’ Club, the university administration dissolved both the JUCSU and the Hall Parliaments. No further elections have been held—until now.
