The 12th Parliament commenced its first budget session on Wednesday to deliberate and approve the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin summoned the budget session, marking the third parliamentary session of 2024, which began at 5:07 pm.

The national budget for the upcoming fiscal year, starting July 1, is projected at Tk 8 lakh crore, with a significant Annual Development Programme (ADP) of Tk 2,65,000 crore.

The National Economic Council (NEC) has allocated Tk 70,687.75 crore, the highest at 26.67pc, for the transport and communication sector. Additionally, autonomous bodies or corporations have been allocated Tk 13,288.91 crore as part of the ADP.

Including the ADP for autonomous bodies or corporations, the total size of the ADP for 2024-2025 stands at Tk 2,78,288.91 crore. The ADP comprises 1,321 projects, of which 1,133 are investment projects, 21 are survey projects, 87 are technical assistance projects, and 80 are projects from autonomous bodies and corporations.

The Local Government Division is set to receive the highest allocation among ministries and divisions, totaling Tk 38,809 crore, representing 15pc of the ADP allocation.
