A terrific century by Mahmudul Hasan Joy powered Bangladesh Cricket team to take 52-run lead on Day 2 of the first Test against Ireland Cricket team at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Bangladesh piled up a mammoth total of 338 for the loss of one wicket before the bails were drawn for the second day.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy remained unbeaten with 169. He hit 14 fours and four sixes in his 283-ball innings. It was his second century in Test cricket.
Earlier, Ireland was all out for 286 in the first innings on the second day of the play.
The Tigers had a solid start as openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam put on together 168 runs in the opening stand before Shadman Islam was caught behind by wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker off Mathew Humphreys.
Shadman Islam notched up a superb 80. His 104-ball knock was belted with nine fours and a sixer. Shadman played 49 deliveries with seven fours and a sixer to reach his seventh half-century in Test cricket. After Shadman,s dismissal, Mahmudul Hasan and Mominul Haque built a worthy partnership scoring together 170 runs for the unbroken second wicket stand.
Experienced Mominul Haque remained unbeaten with 80 runs. He hit five fours and two sixes in his 124-ball knock. It was Mominul Haque’s 23rd half-century in Test cricket.
Mathew Humphreys was his team’s only bowler who got success. He picked up one wicket conceding 78 runs.
Ireland resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 270 for the loss of eight wickets.
Barry McCarthy resumed his first innings with the over-night score of 21 runs.
Mathew Humphreys arrived at the crease on the second day. But Humphreys (0) was trapped leg before wicket by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam when Irelands score was 278 for the loss of nine wickets.
Barry McCarthy could add more 10 runs on the second as he (31) bowled out by right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud when Ireland’s innings came to an end.
Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam shone with the cherry as they bagged two wickets each instead of 42 and 78 runs respectively.
