Staff Reporter :
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has termed Sajeeb Wajed Joy as the “future leader” of the party, and at the same time opinioned that he should not be forced to be included in the central committee at this moment.
“Joy would join in party’s central committee on his choice. We cannot create any pressure on him to join in the party’s leadership… We have a plan with Joy. We expect him as the future leader of AL,”
Quader said at a press conference on Wednesday.
After meeting newly elected departmental secretaries at party president’s Dhamandi-3 political office, Quader said that most of the councilors, during the council session held in the capital on October 22 and 23, wanted to see Joy in the party’s central committee.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is now working as Information and Communications Technology [ICT] Affairs adviser to the PM.
“We have high hopes and dreams involving him. He expressed his eagerness to work for the party and country’s people. But he did not want to hold any post in the party. So, he was not given any organisational post in AL,” Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, stated.
Explaining the issue, Quader further said: “Being pressured, Joy had to take seat on the dais during first day of the council. Joy, a councilor of the party, was also pressured to deliver speech and stay in the committee. But he did not agree with it. Rather, he tried to say not to make him like Tariqie Zia.”
After the meeting with newly appointed secretaries of the AL Central Working Committee, the Quader said: “The party will elect maximum 100 assistant secretaries of the AL sub-committee in line with the party constitution.”
AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, departmental secretaries Habibur Rahman Siraj, Ashim Kumar Ukil, Afzal Husain, Sujit Roy Nandi and others attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, the AL also finalised programmes for the historic Jail Killing Day. On November 3, in 1975, four party’s central leaders – country’s first acting president Syed Nazrul Islam, first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain Mansur Ali and AHM Quamruzzaman — were killed inside the Dhaka Central Jail.
The programmes include hoisting party flag half-mast at party’s central office at 6:00am, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmandi and at the graves of Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed and Mansur Ali at Banani graveyard.
A discussion will also be held at Krishibid Institute auditorium at 3:00pm, where party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside.
A separate programme will also be held in Rajshahi on the occasion.
